I think Kerr commented that both for McGee & for the team's future luxury tax situation. If you think next year's salary tax situation will be bad as they try to keep the core players, it only get worse if they succeed. Since the key players' salaries increase faster than the salary cap increases, the luxury tax penalty will skyrocket after next year, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars a year later! In order words, for each million they pay McGee in 2018~19, they will have to pay something like $3 mils in tax penalty. If the GSW succeed in retaining their core, then they can only afford minimal bench together with the core. They won't be able to afford paying $3 mils for McGee in 2018~19. Some columnist did an estimate and saying that the GSW will need to pay total 1.4 billions for the next 4 years in total salaries and tax penalty if they want to keep their core team, and that does not include paying good salaries for the bench. So their strategy will focus on luring good players who are willing to sign for minimum salaries in order to get a ring. ... |
